iDEAL becomes Wero: what it means for your webshop
iDEAL is gradually merging into the European Wero. What has already changed, what happens at the end of 2026 and in 2027, and what you should arrange now.
Almost every Dutch webshop runs on iDEAL. So it's worth knowing that iDEAL is gradually merging into Wero, the new European payment system from the European Payments Initiative (EPI). No need to panic — but you don't want to find out in 2027 that your checkout is out of date.
What has already happened
- Early 2026, the combined "iDEAL | Wero" label appeared in Dutch checkouts. Webshops and payment providers had until 31 March 2026 to roll out the new logo.
- Since April 2026, transactions are being moved to the Wero platform behind the scenes, in a controlled way. For your customer, paying still feels exactly the same.
What's still coming
- End of 2026, the weight shifts to Wero, and new integrations and contracts for merchants really come up.
- End of 2027, the iDEAL name disappears from the checkout.
- From 2028, Wero introduces purchase protection for consumers — something iDEAL never had.
What you can do now
- Ask your payment provider about their planning. If you use a provider such as Mollie, they handle the connection to Wero; you don't integrate with Wero yourself. Do ask when your account moves over and whether anything changes in your settings.
- Check your fees. iDEAL had low fixed fees per transaction. What Wero fees look like for you depends on your provider and contract. Until the end of 2028 there is a cap on what Wero charges providers.
- Check your checkout. Is there still a standalone iDEAL logo, old wording like "Pay with iDEAL" in emails or on the thank-you page, or a custom pay button with the old logo? Quick to change, but it does need doing.
- Remember your B2B flows. If you use payment links on invoices or in a customer portal, include them in the conversation with your provider.
How we handle this
For the webshops and payment integrations we build and run, we track this transition: we update logos and wording, and we retest the payment flow as soon as the provider makes the switch. Not sure whether your own webshop is ready? Send us a message — a short check is usually enough.
